H-5 HELO - PARTIALLY MODIFIED
This H-5 was used by a helicopter loadmaster until the mid-1980s: the expiry label shows the date September 1986.
This particular helmet is interesting as not all standard modifications were carried out on it.
It features the ‘new’ type of white padding and the modified visor; presumably, even though it wasn’t necessary given its configuration, the original-shaped ones were no longer available over time.
For our photos, we have installed an unmodified version to show what it looked like at the start of its helo career.
It was probably originally used on early jets, given the holes indicating the installation of the rear leather mount for the communication cable.
Presumably following the decision to use it on helicopters, the comm cable retaining strap was removed but the cable not repositioned at a 45° angle;
the ‘banana mount’ for the boom microphone installed, whilst the shell ‘gullwing cut’ modification not carried out; the leather connecting flaps for the oxygen masks cut off, and, probably because the modification was implemented before they were introduced, the cast ones not fitted.
