CDR Lewis Scott (Scotty) Lamoreaux wore this APH-6 helmet while leading FIGHTING SQUADRON 84 “JOLLY ROGERS” aboard the USS Independence (CVA-62) during 1965. The ship operated in the Tonkin Gulf for 7 months.
During this time VF-84 F-4B Phantoms flew 1507 sorties over South and North Vietnam. VF-84 used to paint their flight helmets with yellow and black stripes indicating the pilot’s rank.
