Mk IIIA flying goggles

Stores Ref. No. 22C/62

Introduced in 1936 this type of goggles used the same pattern and framework as the Mk III, but differed from its predecessor by the lack of padded leather surrounds, replaced by padded velvet cushions.

The curved celluloid lenses of the short-lived Mk III series were very susceptible to stratching and distorted vision significantly. These deficiencies, significant and potentially lethal during air combat, discouraged many fighter pilots to wear goggles at all. A fact which would result in many serious, and avoidable, facial injuries and burns.
