H-5  HELO - LOADMASTER

In the mid '80s the H-5 started to be withdrawn from service.

Helicopter crews were equipped with SPH-4s. Stored surplus H-5 helmets were to be modified with SPH-4 communication harnesses and  distributed to helicopter loadmasters or (if required) to passengers.

Is interesting to note that during the era when the  H-5 was being phased out, children who sent a letter to the Air Force asking for a pilot helmet received one free of charge in its Sportex box...Those helmets are sometimes surfacing from cellars and attics, frequently sporting unusual liveries or strange modifications...
