LEATHER HELMET

Soviet Air Force leather flying helmet

The Soviet Air Force (Voyenno-Vozdushnye Sily, VVS) relied on open cockpit aircraft without radio communication well into WWII (the so-called Great Patriotic War). Thus pilots were mainly equipped with heavy leather, fur lined helmets.

This variant of the fur-lined open cockpit leather helmet features a long throat flap and neck protector, goggle retaining straps and earflaps with stud fasteners.

Soviet Air Force flying goggles

This is a pair of the standard issue wartime flying goggles with curved rectangular lenses. The alloy frames feature the typical raised air vents and a wide one-piece rubber cushion.

The goggle strap features a Luftwaffe eagle stamp, so it seems that this specific specimen has changed owner at least once in its career.
