USMC APH-5 VMA-332

This APH-5 belonged to Lt James E. GRAHAM – USMC.

Lt Graham flew with the Marine Attack Squadron 332 (VMA-332) „Polkadots“ based at Cherry Point MCAS. During 1962 crisis between Laos and Thailand, VMA-332 was sent to Bangkok  for Exercise Air Cobra.

This squadron flew the Douglas A-4C Skyhawk until 1968 before switching to the Grumman A-6 Intruder. At this point the squadron’s name changed from „Polkadots“ to „Moonlighters“.

The „foot“ insignia might correspond to the pilot’s nickname „Lightfoot“, as reported on the same helmet carryin bag.

The Polkadots design is an heritage of the VMA-332 Korean deployment on Vought F4U Corsair.

Below: The  grouping shows the standard basic A-4  pilot equipement. The interesting FULTON’S PERMISSIBLE FLASHLIGHT, of pink color, is sometimes seen on 1960’s USMC/USN pilots pictures.

This flashlight seems to have been preferred  by „Tunnel Rats“ infantrymen and Special Groups  since it was usable in highly explosive environnement .
