Siemens Type LKpW100 winter flying helmet

Manufacturer:                   Striegel + Wagner GmbH, Lichtenfels, Bayerische Ostmark

Production date:               7 June 1937

Size:                               58

Anf. Zeichen:                    FL 31217

Constructed of dark brown goatskin leather and lined with lambskin fleece (other manufacturers also used rabbit fur) this was the standard early-war Luftwaffe aircrew issue flying helmet. The round-shaped metal (in other cases bakelite) housings mounted on either side of the helmet contain factory installed earphone receivers with internal wiring.

Equipped with a concealed adjustable strap terminating in a "U" shaped eyelet on top of the helmet and a small flat hook located on either side, this helmet was designed for wearing with the three-strap oxygen mask.

Type Mi 4 throat microphone

This helmet is equipped with early-style, round shaped throat microphones, which virtually eliminate outside noise, but are very uncomfortable for the wearer. As they are to be worn tightly in order to provide clear communication, they tend to throttle the wearer due to their attachment consisting of a length of sprung elastic on either side of the helmet.

Model 306 flying goggles

This variation of the "Fliegerschutzbrille" was one of the two main Luftwaffe issue types.

The model 306 features two separate rubber face pads around each eyepiece and an adjustable bridge to optimize the fit on the wearers face.

The frames are of brass and aluminum and the large, optically correct lenses provide a wide field of vision, including the possibility to wear corrective spectacles or a Splitterschutzbrille (anti-splinter goggles) underneath.
