C Type leather flying helmet, second pattern

Stores Ref.:            22C/880

Size:                      4

Markings:                "GROOVES"

In 1944 the internally wired C type flying helmets were issued. These came with wiring loom and earphones already factory installed.

This (post WWII) example comes without front goggle straps and features an elastic chin strap and a built in clip on the right side to accommodate the oxygen mask's attachment hook.

Other features which make it distinguishable from wartime examples are the shallower cut of the brow and the ear receiver cords passing outside of the helmet, anchored by two extra, short leather straps.

G type oxygen mask

Stores Ref. No.:       6D/643-645)

Although development started as early as 1941 and production began in 1942, this well-designed, comfortable and effective mask was issued only from April, 1943.

The mask came in three sizes (L = 643, M = 644, S = 645) and incorporated many designs which were a result of thorough studies about causes and effects of oxygen starvation and progress made in rubber technology.

Constructed of soft, flexible grey rubber, it is secured to the flight helmet by means of an elasticized webbing harness. A snug fit to the wearer's face can be obtained by shaping the copper wire fitted across the nose of the mask.

Oxygen entered the mask through the flexible hose and tubular channels molded into each cheek. The expiratory valve is mounted directly above the inlet junction, while an additional aspiratory valve on the left side of the mask permits outside atmospheric air to enter the mask and supplement the oxygen supply at lower altitudes.

Type 48 microphone assembly

With the arrival of factory wired flying helmets, the cumbersome wire looms were finally dispensed with. New designed microphone assemblies were installed, instead.

The type 48 comprised a type 26 electromagnetic microphone (Stores Ref. No. 10A/12570) fitted with a short braided lead and double-prong female socket (type 453) which connected directly to the flying helmet.
