The helmet at left is showing the first configuration of the early H-5s delivered to the Swiss AF.

The helmet picture at right, taken from an old "Schweizer Illustrierte" magazine issue, shows the first modification made by the Swiss AF ALSE shop to the purchased H-5s:

Instead of the leather snap/button fittings for the oxygen mask, two "T-bayonet" receivers were installed.

The second and more "classic" modification, was the "gullwing cut" to improve pilot's visibility. This modification was initiated by the former chief instructor of air combat and proved to be more successful than a third proposal described below.

The third modification consisted in cutting and re-shaping the rear edge of the helmet in order to improve the pilot's capability to move his head upwards towards the vertical axis.

This proposal was rejected by the Air Force Medical Institute reportedly due to a major exposure to possible injury of the pilot's head.

Despite the refusal, some pilots personally modified their helmets, anyway.

The picture above gives an example of a not modified (LH) and a modified (RH) H-5.

The visor also underwent modification. It was grinded/sanded in order not interfere with the MS22001 oxygen mask and the oxygen mask receivers fitted on helmet. This picture shows a visor with original shape cut.

During the restoration of such a flight helmet the original US Navy gold color often surfaces from under the later applied white paint livery.
